Dick does Docking

How fast can you tie up your boat at the gas dock? Or at a strange marina? A lot depends on whether you're tying up to a floating or fixed dock. If it's a fixed platform and you know you will be staying for several hours or overnight, you'll have to take the tidal difference into consideration. On the Hudson River, for example, there is a 6 foot difference between low and high tide.... The tidal flow along the Hudson is almost 7 knots, so you don't really have a second chance to grab a line before you hit the dock. Even if friends are along, it doesn't necessarily make docking easier, unless they know your routine.... So where am I going with this? Simple. There are docking aids that can help and in this column, I'm going to talk about some of the ingenious ones....

Fendergrip® from New World Marine makes setting and adjusting fenders a breeze. Fenders at the wrong height for a particular dock often offer no protection at all and sometimes boaters are reluctant to reset them when they know they can gas and be underway in 10 minutes. That may be fine for a lake with no traffic, but around a busy gas dock, there are always inconsiderate boaters that can cause damage to boat railings and the gelcoat- or worse- to fingers and feet. People instinctively use their hands and feet to fend off and that's not a good practice.

Fendergrip®'s push-button action provides fender-height adjustment in seconds. Simply put, fender lines, in either 3/8" or 1/2" thicknesses, pass throught the grip and over the boat's railing. A push of the black button activates the release that lets you raise or lower the line's position. When the fenders are where you want them, let go of the button and the line is locked securely in place. Fendergrip® is extremely versatile and comes with instruction photos that illustrate how to use the product on cleats, lifelines and railings. With two grips, you can even use fenders horizontally. If you're trying to raft up with another boat, you know there often just a couple of seconds to judge exactly where the fenders should be. With Fendergrip®, that's all it takes. Built to last, they're made with two types of Dupont® Delrin®, which contain UV inhibitors, and there shouldn't be any corrosion problems because the working parts are stainless steel.

Get A Grip

I recently helped my father move his pride and joy, his 21-foot Wanderer, to her new home in Southwest Florida. When it came time to hang her fenders, however, it seemed we couldn't readjust them fast enough to avoid smacking into the pilings. If I only remembered that I had New World Marine's Fendergrip® sitting back in the office.

Fendergrip® is a quick release, push button instrument that allows you to adjust your fender height in seconds. It has a sure lock, so there's no worry once you're set up, and it's made of stainless steel hardware and durable DuPont® Delrin® with UV protection. The Fendergrip® comes with a three-year limited warranty and a 30 day money back guarantee.

Gripping Situation

There are many ways to hang a boat fender: clips, holders, brackets and of course, tying them to the bow rail. All of these methods work... problem is most of them don't allow for easy adjustment. New World Marine has a new plastic gizmo called Fendergrip® that lets you adjust your fender's height at the touch of a button. I used the Fendergrip® for a few months [now] and believe me, it gets the job done.

You can install the Fendergrip® faster than you can tie a bowline; the clasp hooks onto a cleat, bowrail, grabrail or anything you can attach a line to. I used it quite often for rafting with other boats. Designed to be used with 3/8" to 1/2" lines, the Fendergrip® contains UV inhibitors, so leaving it out in the sun should have little effect....

Tie and Retie in No Time

The Fendergrip® allows boaters to adjust and use their fenders more effectively by eliminating the time required to tie and retie lines. The unique push button feature of the Fendergrip® provides instant fender placement at just the right height to cushion a boat from bumps against the dock, or other boats. A positive lock sets the line in place once the button is released.

The Fendergrip® may be used with a variety of braided or twisted lines from 3/8 to 1/2 inch (9 to 13 mm) diameter; it also may be attached to cleats, grab handles, lifelines, stanchions, and rails of any size and shape....

The Fendergrip® is handcrafted and made in the USA with stainless steel hardware and DuPont® Delrin®. It is backed by a 3 year limited warranty, plus a thirty day customer satisfaction guarantee.

A Quick Way to Avoid Bumps and Scrapes

The Fendergrip® helps prevent boat damage through faster, more effective fender deployment. Made of Dupont® Delrin® acetal resins, the device eliminates the time required to tie and retie lines. Its push button feature allows boaters to set fenders instantly at just the right height to cushion bumps against the dock or other boats. When the push button is released, the device provides a positive lock to hold the fender line in place.

The Fendergrip® consists of four injection molded parts; a two piece housing, a push button, and a cam plus four screws and a spring [all] made of stainless steel. Line threaded throught the unit is locked between integral teeth in the interior of the housing and the cam. Actuation of the push button disengages the cam and allows raising r lowering of the fender. Molded in ridges on the casing and push button allow a sure grip, even for wet hands.

The housing parts are molded from a white UV stabilized Delrin®. The push button and cam are molded from a black 25% glass reinforced [version of the] resin. Its reinforcemnt provides the added strength to withstand actuation and locking forces.

The manufacturer of the Fendergrip®, New World Marine, Inc., of Pompano Beach, Florida, specified Delrin® because of its strength, toughness, low wear and low friction; its resistance to attack by salt air, salt water, common marine chemical and sunlight; its suitability for precision molding; and its high molding productivity.

The Fendergrip® can be used with lines from 3/8 to 1/2 inch on cleats, grab handles, and rails of any size and shape....

Easy Fender Adjustment!

Eliminating the time required to tie and retie fender lines, Fendergrip® has a push button feature that lets you set the fenders quickly at just the right height to cushion bumps against the dock or other boats. When you release the push button, a positive lock holds the fender in place. Composed of a two piece housing, a push button, a cam, four stainless steel screws and a stainless steel spring, Fendergrip® has integral teeth inside the housing and cam that secure the line threaded through the unit. The push button disengages the cam, allowing you to raise or lower the fender, and molded ridges on the casing and push button allow a sure grip even if your hands are wet. You can use Fendergrip® with 3/8 to 1/2 inch line on any size and shape cleats, grab handles and rails.

Boatkeeper

The Fendergrip® is a handy new fender hanger that allows you to adjust fenders height without tying and untying knots. Designed for use with either 3/8" or 1/2" fender lines, this plastic, quick-release fender hanger can be used to attach fender lines to any tubular railing..., as well as to life-lines, most deck cleats and metal grab rails or handrails. ...this hanger permits fender height to be instantly adjusted without having to tie knots or hitches. You simply press a release button and then raise or lower the line attached to the fender. Releasing the button causes a built in stainless steel spring mechanism on the inside to grip the line firmly....

No fender benders.

If you are a boat owner, you want to protect that expensive investment. One way to do that is with the "Fendergrip" that can help prevent boat damage through faster, more effective fender deployment.

The device, made by New World Marine, Inc. (Pompano Beach, FL), eliminates the time required to tie and retie lines. Its push-button feature allows boaters to set fenders instantly at just the right height to cushion bumps against the dock or other boats. A release of the button provides a positive lock to hold the fender line in place.

Fendergrip consists of four parts made of injection-molded acetal--a two-piece housing, a push-button, and a cam--plus four screws and a spring made of stainless steel. Line threaded through the unit is locked between integral teeth in the interior of the housing and the cam. Actuation of the push button disengages the cam and allows raising or lowering of the fender. Molded-in ridges on the casing and push button allow a sure grip, even for wet hands.

The housing parts consist of a special white UV-stabilized Delrin 527 acetal supplied by DuPont Engineering Polymers (Wilmington, DE). The push button and cam are molded from black, 25% glass-reinforced Delrin 577. The reinforcement provides added strength to withstand actuation and locking forces.

New World Marine specified the acetal because of its strength, toughness, low wear and friction, and its resistance to attack by salty air and water, common marine chemicals, and sunlight....

Just how confident is [company President Peter Cook] in his product? The Fendergrip comes with a three-year warranty that isn't common in the marine industry, but "the performance of Delrin lets us provide that service to our customers," Cook reveals....
